# The Biology Deck

## A Symbolic Physiology of Living Systems

Version 1.0.0

---

# Introduction

The Biology Deck begins with a plain claim: the body is already meaningful because every part of it does something. The heart does not symbolize reciprocity because of sentiment; it receives what has circulated and sends it onward under rhythm and pressure. Skin does not symbolize boundary because it is merely outside; it is a living, sensing, repairing interface that admits some exchanges and prevents others.

The deck is an oracle of systems rather than prediction. Its primary question is **What is the system trying to do?** A person, relationship, organization, creative work, or community can be read as a living arrangement of signals, boundaries, exchanges, structures, transformations, and repairs.

This is not a medical diagnostic tool. Biological descriptions ground metaphor; readings concern meaning, attention, and action.

---

# How the Deck Works

Each card moves through seven stages: biological function → lived experience → psychological pattern → archetypal function → relational meaning → spiritual/mythic meaning → divinatory movement. Meanings are evaluated in four regulatory states: deficiency, coherent expression, excess, and transformation. There are no automatic good or bad reversals.

The twelve Living Operations are the deck’s primary architecture. Physiological systems, body locations, archetypes, and relationships form overlapping ways to browse the same body.

---

# Model of Meaning

## Function before metaphor

A symbolic claim must be traceable to a distinctive biological operation. The card then asks where human experience has the same structure. The move is analogical, not causal: a gallbladder does not create indecision, but its biology offers a precise model of storing, concentrating, and releasing force at the required moment.

## Three provenance classes

1. **Biology-derived meaning** — follows documented anatomy or physiology.
2. **Traditional correspondence** — names a specific historical or living tradition and source.
3. **Original synthesis** — the deck’s new interpretive bridge.

## Homeostatic ethics

No power is maximized in health. It is proportioned to a whole. The same principle can be absent, coherent, or excessive; transformation restores responsiveness rather than enforcing purity.

---

# Biological Systems

The deck covers conventional nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, skeletal, muscular, integumentary, immune/lymphatic, reproductive, sensory, cellular, developmental, connective, metabolic, autonomic, and microbiome territories. These tags never replace the primary living-operation families.

---

# Archetypes

Archetypes in this deck are verbs made memorable: Messenger, Steward, Circulator, Alchemist, Releaser, Threshold Keeper, Architect, Mover, Witness, Generator, Ancestor, and Weaver. Individual card archetypes specify the way that operation appears. They are interpretive tools, not claims that one mythic system owns the body.

---

# Psychology

The deck treats psychological life as embodied pattern without reducing mind to organ. Signal cards illuminate attention and interpretation; Regulation cards, thresholds and pace; Exchange, reciprocity; Transformation, processing; Release, completion; Boundary, selective contact; Structure, support; Movement, agency; Perception, orientation; Generation, creation; Continuity, inheritance; Integration, state and coherence.

---

# Spirit and Myth

The spiritual register begins with wonder: blood is a moving tissue; bone is living mineral; mitochondria preserve an ancient symbiosis; placenta is an organ produced by relationship. Myth enters where such facts disclose durable human questions. Traditional figures and systems are never treated as interchangeable proof.

---

# Traditions

Traditional correspondences are labeled, sourced, and kept distinct from modern biomedical claims. The initial edition gives focused examples from Greco-Roman/Galenic histories, Daoist and classical Chinese body models, and Ayurveda. It does not claim to summarize any tradition, and it avoids extracting unspecified “Indigenous wisdom.” Future editions should add community-reviewed scholarship rather than anonymous universalism.

See [Research Provenance](#research-provenance).

---

# Homeostasis

Homeostasis is the deck’s central philosophy: viable stability emerges through continuous adjustment. Sensors detect a variable, controllers interpret deviation, effectors act, and feedback changes the next response. Allostasis adds the insight that stability may require changing the operating range itself.

The ethical corollary is simple: **every power becomes destructive when separated from the whole.**

---

# Relationships

No card stands alone. Relationships are functional (Heart ↔ Lungs), systemic (cards sharing physiological work), or constellational (cards enacting the same living operation). Read them as verbs: governs, receives, sends, filters, protects, activates, inhibits, supports, transforms, balances, stores, releases, or communicates.

The Site renders the complete graph from data/relationships.json.

---

# Divination

The Biology Deck is an oracle of function. Ask: What is this system trying to do? What is deficient? What is compensating? Where has a coherent power become excessive? What movement would restore responsiveness?

Cards do not diagnose organs or predict disease. A Kidney card in a reading describes discrimination, balance, repeated filtering, and resource reclamation—not kidney health.

<a id="research-provenance"></a>

# Research Provenance

Scientific descriptions were checked against OpenStax, NIH institutes, NCBI Bookshelf, and peer-reviewed reviews. Cultural material is deliberately narrower than the biology: it appears only when a named source supports a useful, specific correspondence. The manual never treats historical medical cosmology as equivalent to modern physiology.

Every card labels unsourced archetypal interpretation as original synthesis. The structured data preserves source URLs inside each traditional note.

# 82 — Healing

**Living operation:** Integration
**Physiological systems:** immune, connective, cardiovascular
**Body location:** whole body

## Biological Role

Healing coordinates inflammation, debris removal, tissue formation, remodeling, and functional adaptation after injury. This description is the biological ground of the card; the symbolic meanings below are derived from its distinctive work rather than assigned by visual association alone.

## Essence

**repair through staged transformation.**

## Archetype

The Mender · The Weaver

## Psychological Meaning

Psychologically, Healing describes repair through staged transformation. It asks how a person or group performs the living operation of coordinate difference so the organism adapts as one.

## Relational Meaning

In relationship, this card examines whether repair through staged transformation is mutual, timed, and proportionate. It asks what this function receives, what it gives, and what conditions let it work.

## Spiritual / Mythic Meaning

Spiritually, Healing presents ordinary embodiment as a disciplined practice of repair through staged transformation. Its mystery is not escape from biology but attention to the intelligence already present in living matter.

## Traditional Correspondences

No culturally specific correspondence is asserted for this card. Its primary meaning is biology-derived and its archetypal extension is original synthesis.

## Regulation States

- **Deficiency:** fragmentation, state mismatch, missing coordination, or parts acting alone.
- **Coherent expression:** dynamic coherence in which different parts remain distinct and mutually responsive.
- **Excess:** totalizing harmony, suppression of difference, perpetual optimization, or balance enforced by control.
- **Transformation:** Restore movement by following the organ's actual logic: do the work of this phase; do not rush to the next..

## Divination

Healing appears when the question is less “What will happen?” than “What is this living system trying to do?” Its answer is repair through staged transformation.

> **Question:** Which phase of repair are you actually in?

**Action:** Do the work of this phase; do not rush to the next.
