# Interaction States

## State vocabulary

The canonical visual states are idle, available, focused, selected, active, occupied, changed, urgent, completed, locked, unavailable, new, connected and absent.

State is expressed through the Component and its environment before an Overlay is used.

| State | World treatment | Required non-color cue |
|---|---|---|
| idle | breathing material response | stable silhouette |
| available | subtle nearby warmth or motion | affordance motion or focusable role |
| focused | light gathers at interaction anchor | focus sound/haptic and accessible focus |
| selected | material brightens; sigil resolves | persistent sigil or shape change |
| active | local environment responds | meaningful motion or state text |
| occupied | presence/use becomes spatially visible | Avatar/Entity or seat form changes |
| changed | one Renewal pulse, then settles | change Record or subtle mark |
| urgent | slow warm/cool tension | rhythm, icon or spoken status |
| completed | light resolves and disperses | completed mark and Record |
| locked | light withdraws | lock geometry and explanation |
| unavailable | contrast and motion recede | unavailable description |
| new | one restrained arrival resolve | newness announced semantically without a persistent badge |
| connected | relational filament or shared reflection | connection pattern and relationship label |
| absent | habitat and relational trace remain while presence withdraws | absence announced without erasing context |

## Input

Pointer, keyboard, touch, voice, controller and assistive technology resolve through the same interaction anchor and Action contract. Hover is enhancement only. Focus must be visible at 200% zoom and on top of active Effects.

## Panels, Overlays and Chrome

- **Panel:** interface embedded in the Scene; shares perspective and world context.
- **Overlay:** crisp responsive layer above the Scene; explains and acts on a target.
- **Chrome:** surrounding application interface; never masquerades as world architecture.

The Overlay model supports labels, focus, contextual menus/actions, conversations, status, notifications, Offers, Realm information, Entity information, navigation and Portal previews. Overlays bind to semantic targets, remain crisp at responsive scale and withdraw when their context ends; the Scene remains visually dominant.

## Occlusion and interaction

Focused or selected targets cannot become unreachable behind foreground art. Apply the occlusion ladder, preserve spatial context and ensure hit targets remain at least 44 × 44 CSS px where touch is supported.

## Authority

A visible Action is not authority. Before execution, validate Source identity, Avatar context, Realm scope, Role, Permission, Consent, Constraint and current state. An unavailable Action can remain discoverable when explaining the Constraint serves Agency.
